Shakespeare in Music, the Easy Rollers – and Coward!

Shakespeare in Music – 20-23rd April

Several of you will have come to the Shakespeare in Music festival fundraiser that we held here in Hampstead Lane in February – so you will already know what goodies there are in store. But for anyone with a bit of free time next week who fancied a trip to Stratford on Avon, there are a whole load of fascinating events on offer.

The full programme

To give you some idea:
Elizabethan and Jacobean madrigals; Two Dark Ladies of the Sonnets – Shakespeare and Bernard Shaw; Shakespearean drinking songs; the Stratford Chamber Choir; songs for countertenor and lute; Love, Fate & Fire: arias from Shakespeare’s legacy; Facets of Time with Dowland’s Foundry; All Fancy Sick I am From Love with Bloomsbury Baroque – and even some Shakespearean rap with Devon Glover – the Sonnet Man from New York! Who could resist that?

The festival runs from Monday 20th to Thursday 23rd April and tickets have been selling very well – so do not delay if you fancy a little dallying with The Bard!

The Easy Rollers in Hoxton on May 2nd

Some of you may also remember the great recital that opera diva/jazz crooner Dani Sicari gave here this time last year with James Girling – the fabulous guitarist who we first heard in those Thomas Hardy poems from Arthur Keegan a few years ago.

Well Dani and James are part of a larger group – The Easy Rollers – a seven piece jazz band who have been playing together for 10 years now. They take their inspiration from the Harlem, Kansas City and New Orleans of the 1920 and 30s – ‘the Jazz age at the height of its cultural grandeur.’ Fabulously exciting stuff.

They perform widely at jazz festivals around the UK and further afield – but on May 2nd they will be at Hoxton Hall here in London from 8pm onwards. I can’t wait!

More information and tickets here.

The Master Triumphs again

Our Noel Coward evening with William Godfree last month was a rave success!

Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun; Don’t put your daughter on the stage, Mrs Worthington; Mad about the boy; I’ll see you again; Someday I’ll find you; I’ve been to a marvellous party…..

All the favourites were on offer, along with fascinating titbits about the great man’s life and works.

We had scheduled the concert to coincide with one of our long time supporter’s birthday and so we made a party of the evening. Pink fizz and chocolate cake with a very magnificent candle – after the regulation 1950s  Coronation chicken,  Egg mayonnaise and Cabbage and Caper salad. And the birthday lady came very glamourously ‘in period’. Here she is with her granddaughter – who had also scrubbed up for the occasion!

A really fun night was had by all. Thank you to William – and of course to The Master himself.

Thinking forward….

As you know, Salon Music is taking a break from concerts for a few months but – there is, as always, an abundance of wonderful music to be heard in this great city of London, a few local bits of which are listed on our Upcoming Events page.

Garden opening – 21st June

We’ll be back for the National Gardens Scheme opening on June 21st – along with Ian Baker and his saxophone quartet.  More details on booking to come.  As you can see, the garden is still looking quite wintery – but spring is definitely on its way.

To book in advance for the 21st June (and to see all the other wonderful gardens that are open for the NGS) go here.

Tuesday 8th September – From the aulos to the oboe, the lyre to the concert harp with Melinda Maxwell and Hugh Webb

I am delightd to say that we have now been able to reschedule this concert for September. An even better date than the original April one as Melinda will by then have been to a high powered aulus conference in Italy so will have all the latest for us.

Go here for more information and to book.
