Money…..
Not a nice subject to have to talk about so let’s get it over with quick.
Salon Music is not a commercial operation and was never intended to ‘make’ money. But, sadly, we cannot afford to support it so it does have to pay its way. We believe in paying our musicians a reasonable, if not a generous, fee and there are, obviously, costs involved in providing supper and wine – so we do have to ask our audience members to contribute.
Because we are not a public venue we cannot ‘sell’ tickets so we ask you to make a donation to cover these costs. The suggested donation is a minimum of £30 per person.
We normally have between 20 and 25 paying members of the audience – and depending on the number of players we can be paying up to £550 in fees. So if all 25 paying audience members pay £30, that just about squares up! However, if they don’t, it doesn’t. So we really do depend on audience members making that donation.
How to make a donation
However, I am aware that several of you have tried hard to make the ‘right’ donation and have been foiled by the booking mechanism! I hope that we have now re-worded it so that it is clear that you can enter different amounts in the donation box to reflect the number of bookings that you want to make. Apologies for the previous confusion.
So now on to the very much more pleasant subject of…….
Jazz with Dani Sicari and James Girling
We had the most delightful evening last week with Dani Sicari and James Girling – the ‘pared down’ Easy Rollers! Both Dani and James are classically trained musicians but they are also passionate about jazz – and since 2016 they have had a jazz septet called The Easy Rollers playing jazz festivals and gigs around the country. When I met Dani at the Islington Festival after-party last year and she told me about the Easy Rollers I was lamenting the fact that we could never fit a full septet into Hampstead Lane.
‘Well…..’ she said, ‘James and I have been really fancying experimenting with a pared down version of the Easy Rollers – might that work?’ And it most certainly did!
Here is just a very short excerpt from the musical menu – and who could resist ‘I’ll see you in my dreams’, ‘S’wonderful’ and Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Smile’.…..
And just to prove that they really are ‘proper classical musicians’ Dani also treated us to a little Handel – the beautiful Laschia ch’io pianga from Rinaldo – although we were pushing James to play it on a jazz guitar!
Anyhow, the evening was a great success – and we are already planning another for next year. Maybe with the addition of a double bass?….
Thank you Alison for another lovely sketch!
