Islington Festival in full flow

If you fancy cooling off for a few hours in a nice airy church while listening to some delightful music, this is the week to do it as the Islington Festival is in full flow. Run by my good friends Joana Ly and Martin André – who some of you will have heard playing delightful café music at the Highgate Society a few weeks ago and others will remember hearing last year at the Highgate Festival – this is the Islington Festival’s second year and they have already ambitiously expanded to 10 days and 14 concerts!

We are already a few days into those 14 but there is plenty left to enjoy  – including double bills on Thursday and Friday, a quadruple bill on Saturday and a grand finale on Sunday. To give you a very quick run down:

Thursday 21st

7pm – Christ Church Highbury – tenor, violin, cello, piano
Clara Schumann Songs, Robert Schumann – Dichterliebe and Brahms – Piano Trio in B Major

9.30pm – Little Angel Theatre – tenor, theorbo and baroque guitar
Early Music, Late at Night – Monteverdi, Giulio Caccini, Dowland, Purcell and others

Friday 22nd

7pm – Christ Church Highbury – I Musicanti
Louise Farrenc – Rossini – Dvorák

9.30pm – Newington Green Meeting House – Trombone Quartet
Sackbuts, classical trombones, romantic trombones, English peashooter trombones…. Definitely cannot miss this one!

Saturday 23rd

1pm  South Arcade, Islington Square – Gypsy Jazz
Sol Grimshaw Quartet – who many will remember played for the Highgate Society back in May

3pm – Newington Green Meeting House
Drawing Class with Live Music

7pm – Christ Church Highbury – Piano recital with Dmitri Kalashnikov
Bach/Liszt – Prelude & Fugue; Mozart; Beethoven; Chopin; Brahms

 9.30pm – Newington Green Meeting House – violin recital with Kati Debretzeni

Sunday 24th

7pm – Christ Church, Highbury  – Grand Finale
Beethoven – Sonata for Horn and Piano; Mel Bonis – Le matin, Le soir; Dohnányi – Sextet in c minor.  Horn, piano, violin, cello, viola, clarinet.
