A few weeks ago Willam Jack launched his new album, The Old Cello Box Volume 2, at one of our Rush Concerts – and what a great evening that was. A full house and some pretty amazing cello music.
Because William’s cello music is so different and so interesting I am actually giving you two extracts from the album. This is Overseas Stamp.
And this……. Err….. Well, it was number 7 on my list….
While this – a familiar tune if a less familiar way of playing the cello – was number 15.
It was a great evening with lots of wine drunk and CDs bought. And then William was off on tour again before heading back to his native Australia for Christmas. However he will be back next year when he will, I hope, be playing for us at one of our Highgate Society lunchtime concerts.
Meanwhile, if you want to get up close and personal with that Old Cello Box, go here on William’s site where you can both stream and buy it.
Atomised Music
I find it very difficulty to resist an oddity, especially when that oddity is on offer at my favourite venue, Stone Nest in Shaftesbury Avene. So, when they advertised ‘Atomised Listening – an interactive sound installation using obsolete technology’ I was, inevitably, intrigued. And it was a fun idea.
A series of reel to reel Revox recording machines piping out sounds into the eerily lit chapel controlled by the visitors from a central mixing desk. The trouble was that the range of sounds on offer from the mixing desk was not only very limited but quite irritating – only enlivened by the passing police car.
What a wasted opportunity. With a more imaginative and exciting sound palette it could have been a really fun interactive experience.
However, I am not to be put off and am now considering Stone Nest’s offering for the 25th February when, in 4D sound, Echo Collective will turn ‘traditional classical instruments into sonic machines, darting between piano, harp and strings…. mirroring between two identities’….
Meanwhile….
If you have an hour to spare at lunchtime on the 5th December (next Thursday) the lovely Aisha will be returning to us with her harp and pieces by Scarlatti, Hindemith, Debussy, Pearl Chertok and Fauré.
12.45pm at Hampstead Lane for a warming glass of mulled wine and an hour of relaxing harp music. Book here or pay on the door – £15 to include the mulled wine.
For other future happenings in at Hampstead Lane and elsewhere – see our Upcoming Events page.
