Jazz garden party
As you can see, we were very lucky with the weather for our jazz-in-the-garden party last Sunday. Apart from one very brief sprinkle of rain and a briskish breeze, the sun shone on us for most of the afternoon. Tucked under the apple tree, Sol Grimshaw and his colleagues, Harry Diplock and Lorenzo Morabito, were pretty well protected from all elements – although in constant danger of being dive bombed by falling apples. However, that certainly did not affect their playing – and here they are with Georgia.
And tucked up on the patio here are my Highgate Cemeteries gardening collegues making short work of the cheese shop full of delicious cheese we had on offer. A very pleasant afternoon was had by all.
Salon Music Autumn Programme
So, now that we are already into September, what do we have in the schedule for the next few months? First up…..
Sunday 5th October – Trio Notturno in the Salons of Vienna
In early 19th century Vienna the guitar was the instrument of the day both for domestic music-making (in salons such as ours) and as a solo concert instrument. And Trio Notturno, Jamie Akers (guitars – various), Eva Caballero (flute) and Rachel Stott (viola), have come together to explore the wealth of music that was written for those guitars .
Trio Notturno’s programme for 5th October will include familiar names such as Beethoven and Diabelli as well as their lesser-known friends and compatriots – and a recent composition specially written for Trio Notturno.
The door will open at 6.30 for a 7pm start and the concert will be followed by an early 19th century supper – including the ever popular Cabbage and Caper Salad…

Wednesday 22nd October – New Composer Rush Hour concert
Harpist Hugh Webb, violist Bridget Carey and flautist Nancy Ruffer, who we last heard in March playing that wonderful Debussy recital, will be playing two pieces by young composers, Declan Molloy and Phoenix Archbold.
Phoenix’s Meandering Shadows takes us through a shadowy forest represented by all three instruments and their melodic lines as they shadow each other.
In Declan’s piece, The Elements, each of the four movements captures one of the earth’s four main elements: water, wind, earth and fire.
6pm for a free glass of wine – concert at 6.30pm. Book here.
Wednesday 12th November – Clarinet Fest
Duo SHILVANOV – Hannah Shilvock on the bass clarinet and Boyan Ivanon on the clarinet – have been performing together for nearly five years ‘blending the rich textures of contemporary classical music with vibrant Latin rhythms and funky lyricism!……’
Hannah played for us last year with her pianist colleague Viola Lenzi for a Highgate Society Sunday lunchtime concert and I was blown away by the wonderful deep throaty tones of her bass clarinet. So I cannot wait to hear it paired with Boyan’s more classical instrument. More to come in a future post about the players and the programme but it will include pieces by Piazzolla, Tozzola, Ruth Gipps, Ante Grgin and Svante Henryson.
6.30 for a glass of wine, concert at 7pm followed by a suitably vibrant and funky supper!

Thursday 11th December – London Chamber Ensemble – Brahms and Schubert
Madeleine and the LCE will be joined by cellist Kirsten Jenson and violist Dorothea Vogel for Brahm’s Sextet No. 2 and Schubert’s Cello Quintet.

And then into 2026….
Thursday 29th January – the Bellot Ensemble
Lucine Musaelian with her viola da gamba and her limpid voice, Daniel Murphy on the theorbo and Edmund Taylor on the violin with make up the Bellot Trio who will be playing for us in January.
The Bellot Ensemble are an early instrument group who specialise in 17th century music – so we look forward to pieces from Cavalli, Monteverdi, Barbara Strozzi and Marco Uccellini.
More details on the evening and how to book very soon.
Thursday 26th February – Nathaniel Mander and La Pompadour
We are delighted that Nathaniel and La Pompdour are returning for another visit next February.

Wednesday 11th March – Beethoven Trios

(We will be welcoming Kirsten back as she will already have been with us for the London Chamber Ensemble Brahms in December.)
