November delights…..

Nathaniel’s new spinet – ready to play even if it’s decoration is not yet quite complete.

I am both delighted and sorry (for those who left booking till the last minute) to say that Nathaniel’s concert on the 4th is now sold out. But I certainly plan to bring you a taste of the music after the event – although I fear a taste of the supper is beyond even the internet’s powers.

But, if you have missed out on the 4th you are still very much in time to…..

Climb aboard the Magic Carpet – 7.30pm  November 9th – St James’ Picadilly

Devised by Emma Kirkby & Clementine Thompson, sopranos
with Alex Buckley, clarinet – Harry Buckoke, viola da gamba –  Toby Carr, lute & theorbo –  Calvin Leung, piano – Laurence Williams, bass

Music by Blow, Purcell, Schubert, Debussy, Ravel, Libby Larsen

To buy tickets – £20; £15 (seniors); £10 (students) go here.

MAGIC CARPET is a fresh venture to help young vocal musicians, and others – and, in uncertain times, to unearth what is already available in wonderful Britain.

…and catch….

Fanny: The Other Mendelssohn

Bafta winning documentary maker Sheila Hayman’s new film about her great, great, great grandmother, Fanny Mendelssohn. I was lucky enough to be at the premiere on Friday and the film totally lived up to expectations.

Fanny, musically intrepid but horribly constrained by her social position and the universal belief that only men were capable of composing music, actually composed over 450 pieces of music – including her Easter sonata which was not only lost for over 100 years but when it was found was attributed to her brother Felix. Sheila’s film not only takes us through her life but features Isata Kanneh-Mason discovering, talking us through then playing the Easter sonata. Beautifully shot, humourous and sad – the film is followed by a fascinating Q&A with Sheila and Isata in conversation with Sandi Toksvig.  See it!!

Now showing in Picture Houses round the country – go here for tickets.

And then for something entirely different….

The Oud meets Cuneiform – Christmas flavours from Syria and Baghdad –  1st December – 6.00 pm

Iraqi artist Khulood Da’mi will be showing some of her work (for more go to her site here) and will be selling Baghdad inspired small Christmas gifts…
…while…
Syrian oud player Rihab Azar will be introducing us to her oud. To hear her play check in to YouTube here.

For more information and to book tickets – cost £15 to include a glass of wine and a snack – go here.
