United Strings of Europe with Ruby Hughes
I very much hope that the Wigmore Hall is going to add last Friday’s excellent lunchtime concert to their wonderful video library.
(How many of you, I wonder, spent many happy lockdown hours enjoying the uplifting stream of live concerts that the WH poured out throughout lockdown via their Video Library. There may only have had an audience of two – John Gilhooly and the Radio 3 presenter of the day – but I am sure there were thousands listening on line. I certainly was.)
The United Strings of Europe are a group of string players under the leadership of Anglo-Lebanese violinist and director Julian Azkoul. They perform across Europe and the Middle East both commissioning and playing new music from a variety of musical cultures and backgrounds. You can get a taster of what they do here on their site.
I first heard them at Wilton’s Music Hall when, among other things, they played pieces by the American composer Caroline Shaw and the Argentinian Osvaldo Golijov. Golijov, who does such extraordinary things with strings, was on the menu again at the Wigmore Hall along with works by Joanna Marsh, Errollyn Wallen and Rhian Samuel (all of who were in the audience). Soprano Ruby Hughes interpreted these haunting works so movingly. Errollyn Wallen’s ‘Rain’ and Golijov’s 3 Songs were the totally stand out pieces for me but I woud happily enjoy any of them again.
Do keep an eye out for the United Strings – upcoming concerts are listed on their site.
