This is our ‘in house sketcher’, Alison Gardiner’s delightful take on our lovely jazz musicians at the Highgate Society on the 26th, cellist Shirley Smart with Peter Michaels on guitar.
I was so enjoying listening to them again that I found it really hard to pick a few short clips to share. But here goes with Ain’t Misbehavin’, followed by an Ode to Bulgarian yoghurt (inspired by Peter’s rather too close encounter with the stuff) and finally Ticaraca Tchoub, the very first tune that Shirley learnt when she arrived in Jersualem where she was to spend a number of years soaking up the music of the Middle East.
And if you enjoyed those then have a listen to something very different – a piece Shirley wrote, and dedicated to her grandmother, inspired by the colours in an opal ring that her grandmother had left her.
And so on to 2024….
Our first concert of the year will be on Sunday 21st January and will feature the Lior Solomons Wise trio.
Lior (piano), Edouard (double bass) and Jonah (drums) are all students at the Guildhall School of Music and have been playing together for a couple of years. They take their inspiration from the great names of Bebop jazz – Charlie Mingus, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis and John Coltrane – but will include some compositions of their own.
12 noon – 21st January – £15 to include the Bucks Fizz! Book here.
Alert
And just to note that the 21st will be a music filled day in Highgate as in the evening Emma Kirkby and Jakob Lindberg will be playing and singing songs and solos by John Dowland at Hampstead Lane. But….. before you get too excited, I am afraid that the evening is already sold out. I rather doubt that we will get any returns but if you would like to put yourself on the waiting list you can do so here.
