Those of you who enjoyed The Voice Hildegard of Bingen concert in the Highgate School Chapel will be delighted to hear that Victoria, Emily and Clemmie are returning on September 9th with a wonderful collection of love songs.
Hildegard features but so do 14th century troubadours, Shakespeare, ‘Rabbie’ Burns, Ralph Vaughan Williams and contemporary composers Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Helen Chadwick and Marcus Davidson. To see a full list of the songs see the booking page.

For those of you who do not know the Voice Trio, Victoria, Emily and Clemmie have been singing together for 16 years since they met as members of the Oxford Girls’ Choir. Their interest in Early Music and in Hildegard was nurtured by their time as members of Stevie Wishart’s group, Sinfonye, with whom they still perform. While Hildegard and early music remain at the core of the trio’s work (they released a new album, Hildegard Portraits, this summer and regularly commission new works inspired by her words and chant) all three work with other groups and with other composers – Janacek, for example – or baritone Roderick Williams.
Check in to their website for more information about the trio and, if you would like to hear a little sample of their love songs, go here.
The concert will take place in the chapel starting at 7pm – you can book here.
But we will be there from 6.30 if you would like to join us for a (free!) glass of wine before it starts – more wine on tap during the interval. And all for only £20….
There will a programme with the texts of all of the songs if you would like to follow them (also free!) and some fascinating details about each one. For example:
Batonebo is a healing song from Guria in the western part of Georgia. The words tell of a child lying ill and this song entices out the ‘Batonebi’ (literally Lords or Sirs) that are thought to cause illness by entering the child’s body.
on cricket, sex and housework and just in case by Ayanna Witter-Johnson on texts by Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze (1956 – 2021). Ayanna writes: “Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze has long since been one of my poetry heroes. A fellow Jamaican, her authenticity has always resonated deeply with me. Her generous invitation for me to set a selection of her poems to music was a dream come true. I waited patiently for the right moment and the opportunity to work with the incredible Voice trio was the perfect green light.”
