New Year concert – The London Chamber Ensemble and late Beethoven

Friday 13th January

We are so pleased to finally be able to welcome the London Chamber Ensemble back to the completed Hampstead Lane. It has been a while… Indeed, Madeleine’s last visit was at the very beginning of the infamous Rule of Six when she, Joseph and their friend David Aspin played Mozart and Kodaly trios to an audience of three – two humans and Boris!! (If you would like to hear some of it – and despite the paucity of the audience, it was amazing – check in to this post.)

Since then, to be fair, they have played for us in the Highgate School chapel – the wonderful Russian Romantics programme that they performed at the V&A’s Fabergé exhibition last year where the image above was taken.  There is, btw, a short film of that concert available on the Ensemble’s website here.

But this is the first time they have been back for a ‘proper’ Salon Music evening complete with supper in the house. So – welcome LCO!!

The programme

Herbert Howells Luchinushka (Lament on a Russian folktune) arranged by Madeleine Mitchell
Beethoven String Quartet No 15 in A minor op.132

As I am sure I do not need to tell you, although the last quartets written at the very end of Beethoven’s life were neither understood nor appreciated by his contemporaries (one fellow composer called them ‘indecipherable, uncorrected horrors’) they are now considered to be among the greatest musical compositions of all time. So a treat in store.

Date: Friday 13th January
Time: The doors will open for a glass of wine at 6.30pm, the performance will begin at 7.00pm and supper will be at approximately 8.15pm
Cost:  £28 per head to include wine and a tasty buffet supper

To book – go here.

We look forward to seeing you all on the 13th.

Thinking forward…

22nd January – the next Highgate Society Sunday lunchtime concert with singer Nel Begley and  pianist Paul Edis
Early March – a solo harp recital with Camilla Pay of the Korros Ensemble

Is Herbert Howells Luchinushka arranged for SQ or something else?

Yes, Madeleine has made an arrangement for her quartet – and presumably anyone else’s who wouldn like to contact her about it.
