Carnival of the Animals, Limbo – and Happy Christmas!

The main purpose of this mail shot was to wish you all a very happy Christmas and jolly New Year – but…

I thought I would also alert you to a great children’s concert happening in January in St Michael’s church – and offer a brief report on the amazing acrobatic violin sonata, Limbo, which happened last week at Jackson’s Lane.

At 3.30pm on Sunday 20th January a call is going out to all party animals to come and join the Carnival. Saint-Saens music brought to life by The Story Orchestra Books – narrated and animated. And….  There will be prizes for the Best Animal Costumes – and the Best Behaved Four Legged Friends.

Tickets cost £10 per child, £20 per adults but family tickets are available and there are early bird concessions if you book before 31st December – Buy your tickets here.

And if you do not already know Saint-Saens’ wonderful carnival – check in to this delightful cartoon on You Tube by Classics Explained.

Limbo

Limbo is a violin and piano sonata in six movements by Australian composer Chloé Charody. It seeks to put into music the frustration and despair of the refugees who were detained indefinitely, some for up to 9 years, in the Melbourne Park Hotel by the Australian government.

It is brought to life by the extraordinary acrobat duo of Josh Frazer and violinist Sonja Schebeck who, somehow, continues to play her violin while being rolled across stage on a cyr wheel, standing on her uni-cyle riding partner’s shoulders, being whirled upside down or suspended by her hair. To get a flavour of both the music and their extraordinary agility, watch this one minute trailer on You Tube.

This is not the first of Chloé Charody’s unique blend of music and circus, much of it developed with Sonja Schebeck. Her first circus opera, ‘The Carnival’ debuted in London to sell out audiences in 2011 and since then she has written 5 circus operas, 2 operatic musicals, 3 ballet operas and one concerto for violin, fire and orchestra… She is currently working on her 6th circus opera. I hope it will come to Jackson’s Lane!

And so ends 2023 for us! To look forward to in 2024 so far……
