On Thursday week, 11th August, the lovely Soumik Datta, sarod master extraordinaire, is playing a private concert just for Salon Music subscribers. The first time he has played for us since those magic concerts in Lawn Road in 2019.
We will be treated to the first outing of the new solo set that Soumik has developed for his autumn UK tour. Based on classic raags and folk music, his sarod will be accompanied by drones and electronics which, he says, makes his instrument sound even more lush….
The evening’s programme
The evening starts at 7pm with a glass of wine – then an hour’s music followed by a buffet supper which, weather permitting, will happen in the rapidly developing garden at Hampstead Lane.
BOOKING
Because this is a private ‘party’ you will not be able to book through Ticket Tailor as usual. Instead please email me to tell me how many ‘tickets’ you would like.
TIMING
The doors will open at 7pm for a glass of wine; music starts at 7.30pm followed by supper at around 8.30pm.
PAYING
Instead of buying a ticket we would ask you to make a donation to Soumik’s charity, Soumik Datta Arts. We would suggest around £20/£25.
Once I receive your booking request I will email you my bank details for payment. I will then gather the monies together and pass them on. If for any reason that does not work for you then please just bring cash or a cheque (made out to me) on the night.
We are very lucky to get Soumik in this month of all months as August is the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence and he is much in demand. He has, for example, created the music for the three DISHOOM ’75 years’ celebration evenings – one in Manchester, one in Birmingham and one in King’s Cross on August 15th – and before you get excited, King’s Cross is already sold out. Another anniversary commission is for the BBC Singers and this will premiere at the Barbican in October.
The image above, btw was part of the publicity for his Hope Notes series which was created during a three month residency at the South Bank this spring, weaving the stories of refugees through a soundtrack of sarod, strings and voices.
‘It didn’t feel right wearing black tie or designer jackets for this show given the theme… so I worked with 2 young designers, Vidhi Jinwala (@omgitsvidhi) and @laialykke from Central Saint Martin’s at @unioftheartslondon to create a look that my band and I would wear to pay tribute to the hardships endured by so many. Our clothes are made out of old tents, recycled parachutes, life jackets and materials from displaced worlds.’
M.ELIZABETH Nelson says
Dear Michelle,
Is there any chance of room for two tonight for your lovely concert and supper afterwards, please?
Sorry short notice,
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Nelson and David Gilbert – Harris.
Michelle Berridale Johnson says
I think we can just about squeeze you in Elizabeth – and I suspect that the heat may men that a couple of people don’t actually make it…..
